BBC NEWS | World | South Asia | Malay court hearing ‘Allah’ case. (via Reddit)
Trademark wars between Christians and Muslims. Muslim clerics (and the government as well, apparently) are worried that the use of Allah to refer to God in Christian churches may confuse some of their own muslim consumers worshipers into praying in the wrong church. I’M NOT MAKING THIS UP.
lol I find this one amusing. Both sides make a certain amount of sense, really. It IS confusing to see people talk about Allah and not think they are Muslims talking about their god. It’s like “Hashem” and Judaism- I’d automatically assume, when I heard that word, that a Jew was talking about the Jewish god. But at the same time, if it is true that the word Allah is used in a generic way for the word god in Malaysia, then it seems perfectly fair to want to use it regardless if which religion is using it.
To turn it around… it would seem silly if someone complained about a religion using the word “God”, as though it belonged exclusively to a certain religion. Christianity? Judaism? something else? I think that proves my point.
